Step-by-Step: Creating Your CRA My Account for Individuals

Before you can authorize anyone, you need to have a CRA My Account. Here’s how to set it up:

1. Go to the CRA Website

Visit:Create  CRA My Account

Click “CRA My Account” and choose the “Sign-In Partner” or “CRA Login” option.

  • Sign-In Partner: Lets you log in using your bank login (BMO, RBC, TD, etc.)

  • CRA Login: Requires creating a CRA user ID and password

2. Verify Your Identity

You’ll need:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)

  • Date of birth

  • Current postal code

  • Info from a prior tax return (Line 15000 from last year’s return)

After you input your details, CRA will mail you a security code within 5-10 business days.

3. Enter Your Security Code

Once your letter arrives, log back in and enter the code to activate full access.

How to Add a Business to Your Account (If Applicable)

If you’re a sole proprietor or want to manage business taxes through CRA:

1. Link Your Business Number (BN)

  • After logging in, click “Profile” again.

  • Choose “Manage Business Authorization” or “Add a Business Number”.

  • Enter your 9-digit BN (Business Number).

If your business is already linked to your SIN, it should appear automatically.

Levels of Authorization Explained

When authorizing a representative, CRA gives you two access options:

  • Level 1: View-only access. Can see tax info but cannot act on your behalf.

  • Level 2 (Recommended): Full access. Your representative can:

    • View and update personal/business info

    • File returns

    • Make account changes

    • Submit documents

For accountants or tax professionals, always choose Level 2 to avoid delays.

Final Note

Authorizing your accountant properly ensures they can handle tax filings, audits, and correspondence with CRA. Double-check that you’ve entered the correct Business Number and selected Level 2 access.
